State Disability

LATE CLAIM. When Apple stopped working, she was too ill to apply for SDI. When she finally applied, her application was already late. The EDD adjusted her Claim Effective Date due to the late filing, resulting in a lower SDI benefit amount. I appealed the case for Apple and asked for a good cause for late filing. We won the appeal and the EDD granted her a much higher benefit amount. She also received all her past-due benefits.

COMPLICATED CLAIM. Jose was an engineer and when he got laid off from work, he applied for Unemployment Insurance (UI). However, he had already been very ill prior to the layoff and should have applied for SDI (which can pay more and longer than UI). He tried to switch from UI to SDI on his own but his claims got stuck within the EDD. I represented Jose on his claim and successfully transitioned him from UI to SDI, recovering for him half a year’s worth of disability benefit.

Benefits Counseling

Manny became disabled with severe depression. He knew he had to stop working, otherwise he would get demoted or fired. I helped Manny plan his medical leave and get disability income to replace lost wages.
